Twin IED attack kills 15 in Burkina Faso Soldiers in an attack suspected to be carried out by jihadists in northern Burkina Faso on Tuesday.

The double attack with an improvised explosive device happened on the Bourzanga-Djibo axis in the Centre-North zone.

It took place during an escort assignment headed by a military unit of the 14th inter-army regiment (RIA),

One of the convoy trucks, carrying fighters, went over and set the improvised explosive device (IED) off near the town of Namsiguia, in the province of Bam. While rescue and security operations were being organized, a second device was ignited from a distance, causing numerous fatalities.

According to security and local reports, at least 10 people were killed, including four Volunteers for the Defense of the Fatherland (VDP).

In a related incident, nine army auxiliaries and four soldiers were murdered last Thursday in an attack on a unit of the military detachment of Bourzanga (north) in a coordinated offensive action with a group of VDP.

The north and east of Burkina Faso have been hit the hardest by Islamist strikes, but other areas are not immune.

According to government data, more than 40% of Burkina’s area is not under state control.

Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba deposed President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré on January 24, accusing him of failing to halt Islamist violence.

However, the security situation has not improved, and assaults blamed on Islamist organisations have increased in recent months, hitting both civilians and the military.
