The chairman of the electoral commission in Kenya has acknowledged that the process of calculating the votes from the country’s presidential election that took place on Tuesday is progressing at an unacceptably slow pace.

The head of the IEBC, Wafula Chebukati, has placed the responsibility for the delay on political parties.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has, in an effort to be more open and forthcoming, released forms on its website that indicate the results from each polling station. This has made it possible for Kenyan TV networks to work out their own counts.

“We have realised that our pace is slower than it ought to be,” said the speaker. The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission is under pressure to deliver a clean vote and release the results by August 16,

For some unknown reason, broadcasters abruptly stopped tallying the results on Thursday, when there were still around one million votes to be counted.

Kenyans went to the polls to vote in six different elections on Tuesday.

These elections included voting for a new president, senators, governors, MPs, women representatives, and over 1,500 county officials.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has been praised by international observers, including those from the United States, the European Union, and the African Union, for strengthening its processes in comparison to prior elections.
