
The UN Security Council has adopted a resolution calling for an urgent extension of the humanitarian moratorium and the need to address the situation of children in the occupied Gaza Strip, Amnesty International Secretary-General Agnès Callamard said:
“After four failed resolutions in the past 30 days, the UN Security Council has finally played its due role and leadership – maintaining peace and security and protecting the international rule of law.”
“While the resolution does not specify the duration of the humanitarian suspension, it is an urgently needed step in a context of immense suffering and repeated violations of international humanitarian law.”

“While the United States abstained rather than vote in support of the resolution, this is the first sign that the United States is ready to abandon its position of unreserved support for Israel at the United Nations. We call on President Biden to use all of his administration’s leverage over Israel to secure this resolution be implemented as soon as possible. We also urge all members of the UN Security Council to take all necessary measures to ensure that both parties to the conflict comply with this resolution. Gaza’s children cannot wait.”
